Halt   Same as trading halt. A halt ceases all trading activity on a stock. This can only be done by a Market Surveillance Officer who is also the person who authorizes the re-opening of the stock. A halt can be initiated at any time due to material news releases or a trading imbalance.
   
Hedge / Hedging   A protective manœuvre, hedging is a transaction intended to reduce the risk of loss from price fluctuations.
   
Hedger   A person or firm who uses the derivatives market to offset price risk when intending to sell or buy the actual asset.
   
Historic volatility   A measure of actual security price changes over a specific period of time. (See also Standard deviation.)
   
Holder   The purchaser of an option.
   
Horizontal spread   See Calendar spread.
   
Hypothecate   To pledge securities as collateral for a loan.
